Also, is it okay to do Bikram in a semi-warm room opposed to it being really hot. I know you probably won’t get the benefits of sweating as much and releasing as much toxins, but is it okay for this type of yoga?
It sounds like you don’t have a studio in your area. I’ve been doing bikram yoga for 3.5 years, and have my own opinion about the heat. I believe that the heat should enhance your practice rather than hinder it. When the room is a nice 104 like it should be it’s lovely.
When it gets to about 50% humidity and feels much hotter it can be cumbersome. Then again, I”m not a size zero. So, in my opinion as long as the room is warm you’ll be fine. Unlike Ashtanga, Bikram doesn’t start as much heat internally so you might want to go for a run first or wear warm clothing as you practice in a cooler room.
Breathing should be a 6-second inhale followed by a 6-second puff out. For the belly down postures they recommend what they call 80-20 breathing. Inhale completely, then puff out 20%, inhale 20% and keep using the top 20% of the lung capacity.

I am not sure of the best way to clean a yoga mat. The one I have has bought a bit of nasty smells accordingly. I wonder if you can just soak it in mild soap and wring it out, or if that might mess it up ? (it is that weird tacky foam-type material)

I’m in a step aerobics currently and we did some yoga the other day. I loved it and want to try it in my own home, what dvd do you recommend?
Try Yoga Journal’s Yoga for Beginners 2 with Patricia Walden. It offers a clear step-by-step instructions and a booklet explaining each pose. Since Particia Walden is Iyengar-trained, she uses props such as chairs, belts and cushions for inflexible people to come into the pose with more ease.
Look for the brand “Giam”, as I have found I really like the way they present the exercise. I know they have both Pilates and Yoga, but the only Yoga DVD I’ve bought was Giam’s Yoga with Rodney Yee. I really like it, and you could even try some of the Simple Pilates or Pilates for Beginners that they have, as Pilates and Yoga are very much alike.
